Call-Only Google Ads: When They Beat Click Ads for Window Contractors

Call-only ads send tappers straight to your phone instead of your website. With the right intake, they often beat standard search ads on cost per job.

Most contractors run standard Google Search ads, text creative, click goes to the website, hopefully a form-fill follows. Call-only ads are a different format: there's no website click, no landing page, no form. A tap on the ad directly initiates a phone call to your business. For residential window & door replacement contractors with disciplined phone-intake operations, a call-first campaign consistently outperforms standard search ads on cost-per-signed-job.

Correction note, 2026-09-20

The format this article was written around is being retired. Google's documentation now states that from February 2026 all options to create new call ads are removed, and that from February 2027 existing call ads stop receiving impressions. Everything below about phone-first intent and intake discipline still holds, but the mechanism you build it on is now the call asset attached to a responsive search ad. Read “call-only campaign” throughout as “search campaign built around call assets.”

What the call-first format actually is

Call ads appear only on devices that make phone calls. When someone engages, their dialer opens with the number already set, either your own number or a Google forwarding number depending on your call reporting settings. Call assets work the same way from the other direction: they attach a clickable call button to a responsive search ad on mobile, and on desktop show a call button with the number and a code the viewer can scan with a phone. Google charges a click on a call asset the same as a headline click.

Attribution runs through the Google forwarding number, which sits between the caller and your business line and records the time, duration, campaign and ad group for each call. If you hardcode your own number and skip the forwarding number, you keep the calls and lose the reporting.

Why they work for window contractors specifically

Several characteristics of the window and door buyer make call-only ads disproportionately effective:

1. High mobile search share

Local-service queries (“window replacement near me,” “windows installed [city]”) skew heavily to phones, often during the buyer's research-while-commuting or research-during-lunch-break behaviour. Check the device split in your own search terms report rather than taking a figure from an article. The single tap to call removes friction the buyer was already feeling, and the format exists only on devices that can place the call.

2. Trust threshold favors voice

Window replacement is a high-ticket, in-home, multi-week purchase. Homeowners thinking about it want to talk to a person, not fill out a form and wait. Self-selecting buyers skip the form-fill stage when given the option.

3. Higher per-call qualification

A homeowner willing to tap-call has higher intent than one willing to form-fill. Form-fills capture browsers; calls capture buyers. Qualification rates on call leads run well above form-fill qualification rates in the contractor accounts we audit, which is an observation from our own reporting rather than a published figure, and it is easy enough to verify in yours.

The conversion-rate gap

The click to form-fill to signed job path loses people at three separate stages. The call path collapses two of them into one conversation: the person who dialled has already self-selected, and the booking happens live instead of in a callback queue. Measure both end-to-end in your own account, because that comparison is the whole argument and it is one report away.

The operational requirements

Call-only ads punish operational sloppiness more aggressively than form-based ads. The reasons:

  • Missed calls = wasted ad spend, immediately. There's no form record to follow up on later.
  • Voicemail-to-callback workflows convert at a fraction of live-answer rates.
  • The receiving voice is the brand experience. A confused office manager fielding the call mid-task degrades brand perception in ways an unanswered form-fill doesn't.

For call-only to work, the contractor needs:

  1. A dedicated phone line for paid traffic (separate from the line that handles operations, scheduling, supplier calls).
  2. Live human (or compliant AI receptionist with seamless escalation) answering during business hours, set hours clearly defined in the ad.
  3. Basic intake script that qualifies on homeowner-status, service-area, project-type, and decision-timeline, and books the consultation, not just collects info.
  4. Call recording for quality assurance and ad-attribution audit, with consent disclosure consistent with the law where the caller is. Recording consent rules vary by state and by province; get the disclosure written by someone who checked yours.
  5. Restricted ad scheduling that only runs the campaign during hours the phone is actually answered.

The ad-schedule discipline

The most common call-only failure: running the ads 24×7. Calls that come in at 9pm or on Sunday afternoon either go to voicemail (low conversion) or to a confused spouse-of-owner who wasn't expecting business calls. Either outcome wastes the spend.

Restrict scheduling to your actual answer hours. Google supports this directly: a call asset can be set to show only on certain days and hours, for example only when your business is answering phone calls. For most contractors that is Monday to Friday through the working day and a Saturday morning. Run a separate after-hours retargeting or standard search campaign that captures intent outside answer hours and routes to a form instead.

Bid + keyword strategy

Call-only campaigns benefit from tighter keyword targeting than standard search. Buyers tapping “window repair” aren't the same as buyers tapping “window replacement near me”, and the call durations and conversion rates show it. Build separate ad-groups for:

  • Window replacement (long-form, full installs)
  • Window repair (smaller jobs, often glass-only)
  • Specific styles (double-hung, casement, bay)
  • Door variants (patio, sliding, French, storm)
  • Branded queries (your business name + windows)

Set call duration as a meaningful conversion signal, a 45-second hangup is not the same as a 7-minute booking conversation. Use call-duration thresholds in your bidding strategy.

The misattribution trap

Without call reporting and a Google forwarding number configured, call attribution decays badly. The number the caller dials is Google's tracking number, which then forwards to your business line, and that is what lets Google record the time, duration, campaign and ad group. Hardcode your business number on the creative instead and you keep the call and lose the reporting that makes optimisation possible.

When call-only doesn't work

Call-only ads aren't universally better. They under- perform when:

  • Your phone-intake operation can't consistently answer live during business hours.
  • Your average call-handle time is short and shallow (under 3 minutes typical), buyers aren't getting enough interaction to commit.
  • Your service area is large and most calls come from out-of-area searchers.
  • Your brand has no existing trust signal for the buyer to anchor on (in which case landing-page trust markers are doing real work that a phone call alone can't substitute).

The right portfolio mix

15-30%

The share of paid Google budget we put behind call-first campaigns for a contractor with disciplined phone intake. It is our working allocation rather than a published benchmark: higher when phone capacity is genuinely strong, lower when the website converts better than the receptionist does.

Call-only is a complement to standard search ads and Local Service Ads, not a replacement. For more on how the channel mix should look, see the full breakdown here. Pair call-only with strong Google Business Profile optimization and the same homeowner who tapped your call ad will also see your Map Pack listing and, if you run Local Services Ads, your Google Verified badge. Note that this is the single badge Google moved to when it discontinued the money-back guarantee behind the old Google Guaranteed badge, so don't promise the guarantee anywhere in your funnel.

Final thought

Call-first campaigns aren't glamorous. They don't produce a dashboard full of form-fills to brag about in a marketing meeting. They produce signed jobs, often at lower cost-per-signed-job than form-based campaigns, when the underlying phone intake is disciplined enough to convert the calls. The format is changing underneath the tactic, from standalone call ads to call assets on search, but the tactic itself is one of the highest-leverage things a window contractor with a strong phone operation can run.
